A 'Bloody' Day at Olathe Northwest

The 2015 Blood Drive was held here at ONW at the flex theater on Friday the 13th. Here in e-Comm Video, we took a small field trip down to the action, and attempted to get b-roll and film interviews for our news stories. It was somewhat of a success in the end. I only managed to collect b-roll and didn't get a chance to interview anybody, but we pooled all of the footage everyone received together into Google Drive so everyone could use others' b-roll and interviews if they didn't have what they wanted. I used interviews with Austin Shively, Even Becerra, Hannah Bureau, and Dr. Poss to help viewers get a feel of what the atmosphere was like at the blood drive and what the donation process included.

I created my news segment off of the donation process at the blood drive. In my voice overs, I described what donors had to do at the drive and I explained what the atmosphere was like at the event, using the interviews to back up my statements.

Overall, I was fairly satisfied with my final project. If I could do it again, I'd change some of my voice overs so there's not the pause in the middle of the segment. I put it there as a cut to the flex theater to show what the atmosphere was like, but it seems as though I meant to put something there and I just forgot. I'd re-word a few of my voice overs so I could just insert one there instead of the two with the pause in the middle. My introduction and ending could use a little work too. When I filmed it, I didn't have the paragraph memorized, so I looked down to read off of my page. If I could do it again, I'd either completely memorize the thing or at least have a nicer-looking page in my hands, like a page with the e-Comm logo on the back or something so I look a little more professional and like I actually know what I'm talking about.

In terms of the actual editing, I felt like I did a very nice job. My transitions were smooth, and both the audio and video transitions were well-timed and made sense to what I was trying to depict in the story at that particular moment. The only minor change I'd make was to increase the nat noise at the part between my two voice overs to make it even more obvious that I'm trying to depict the atmosphere of the flex theater at that moment, not that I just forgot to insert an audio clip there or something like that. Overall, though, I was pretty satisfied with the project and my final product. I was able to take away some key points about filming live at an even that will hopefully come in handy down the road.
