Weekly Blog 1: Article Review

This week, I checked out this article on KCTV5. It discusses how a robbery suspect is suing the man that stepped in to stop him. The suspect is Ryan Flores, who attempted to rob a Starbucks "with a knife and toy gun."

The reporter did a very nice job both outlining the story in a written article and also in a video package. The video package showed both sides of the story, including interviews from Flores' mother, police chief Jerry Dyer, and Charles McGill. However, it's possible there was some bias from the reporter, as she interviewed two individuals that were not on Flores' side and only one that supported him.

In the video package, most of the audio was only coming through the left channel, not both. Also, while we heard the names of the people that were being interviewed, there was no lower third that went along with them, which would have been helpful.

I liked the use of the CCTV footage in the article as it helped show the situation as it happened. While I hope I'll never have to use CCTV footage in one of my packages, it's always a good idea if you can add pictures or other video to help add context to the article.
